Eduardo Abaroa

(b. 1968, Mexico City) is an artist and writer working in the fields of sculpture, installation, and live action. His practice examines aspects of impermanence, history, and the sociopolitical fabric of North American society. He earned his BFA from the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas at the UNAM in 1992 and his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2001. In the early 1990s, Abaroa cofounded the artist-run space Temístocles 44, in Mexico City, and in 2011 he directed the 9th Simposio Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City. Abaroa’s recent solo exhibitions include Total Destruction of the National Museum of Anthropology at the Museo Nacional de Antropología, Mexico City (2012), and the survey exhibition Tipología del estorbo (Typology of the obstacle) at the Amparo Museum, Puebla, Mexico (2017). His work has been shown in major museums such as Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2013); Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2007); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2005); and P.S. 1, New York (2002).

Su práctica examina aspectos de lo impermanente, la historia y el tejido sociopolítico de la sociedad norteamericana. En 1992, obtuvo el grado de Licenciatura en Bellas Artes en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas de la UNAM y en el 2001, el de Maestría en Bellas Artes por el California Institute of the Arts. A principios de los noventa, Abaroa fue co-fundador de Temístocles 44, espacio dirigido por artistas, y en 2011 dirigió el 9no Simposio Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo en la Ciudad de México. Las últimas exposiciones individuales de Abaroa incluyen Destrucción total del Museo Nacional de Antropología, en el Museo Nacional de Antropología, Ciudad de México (2012) y la exposición retrospectiva Tipología del estorbo, en el Museo Amparo, Puebla, México (2017). Su trabajo ha sido exhibido en grandes museos como el Museo Tamayo, Ciudad de México (2013); el Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2011); el Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Ángeles (2007); el Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2005), y en P.S.1, NY (2002).
